Healthy ‘n’ Happy Launches New Rap Project in CamGlen
Senior Team Leader at Scottish charity Healthy ‘n’ Happy, Victoria Ram, explains how BRIT Trust funding will support an exciting new rap project for young people in the South Lanarkshire towns of Cambuslang and Rutherglen – CamGlen.
About the Project
The Healthy ‘n’ Happy Community Development Trust (CDT) is absolutely delighted to have received grant funding from The BRIT Trust to support an exciting new rap project for young people of all backgrounds aged 16–25 in CamGlen.
For over 25 years, Healthy ‘n’ Happy CDT has worked at the very heart of the Rutherglen and Cambuslang community, located just southeast of Glasgow.
We have a simple but hugely important mission: to tackle inequality, reduce isolation, and create opportunities for local people to connect, grow and thrive. We know that music and its power to bring people together can help us achieve this.
The 10-Week Rap Programme
Thanks to the support of The BRIT Trust, we will deliver a 10-week rap project based at our community venue, Number 18.
Young adults will work alongside experienced musicians, local rapper Johnny Cypher, and a professional producer to write, develop and record their own original rap track. Participants will gain hands-on experience in lyric writing, performance skills, music production and recording techniques, building both creative confidence and transferable skills.
The programme will culminate in a special launch event for family and friends. The finished track will also be broadcast on CamGlen Radio, giving participants invaluable experience sharing their work with a wider audience.
Number 18 & CamGlen Radio
Number 18 is a vibrant community venue in the heart of Rutherglen, hosting accessible classes, workshops and events for all ages. With CamGlen Radio occupying the top floor, the building has a strong musical presence and regularly welcomes live bands and music events.
As part of this project, participants will utilise the professional radio studios to record their tracks — adding an authentic and inspiring dimension to their experience.
Looking Ahead
This is a fantastic opportunity for young people in CamGlen to explore their creativity, build confidence and develop new skills in a supportive, professional environment.
We are incredibly grateful to The BRIT Trust and the wider music industry for making this possible. Projects like this not only nurture talent — they provide a platform for young people to share their voice, build hope and fire aspiration.
Who knows? Perhaps it will inspire a young talent to begin a creative journey that one day leads to performing at The BRIT Awards.
